An aberrant Wilson's Storm-Petrel in Massachusetts
26 May 2005

Blair Nikula

This storm-petrel was photographed in Provincetown Harbor, Barnstable County, Massachusetts. In the field, it appeared to be dark down the center of the rump, similar to a Leach's Storm-Petrel. However, the photos show what seem to be two unusually elongate black back feathers that extend about half way down the rump. Additionally, the is a broad gray wedge that projects forward from the black tail about a third of the way into the white rump.

All images taken with a Canon 20D and a Canon 100-400 IS lens.
